Bought this last year just before going on holiday as an upgrade for a D5000 and I am not disappointed. Low-light performance at high ISO settings is extremely good IMHO. The camera retains the lightness and compact size of the D5000 whilst offering a step-up in performance. It also has a selection of effects and a useful night setting although this is in black-and-white only. However in conjunction with the "quiet mode" it enabled me to grab many shots on a night safari that otherwise just would not have been possible on any other camera short of a pro-spec Nikon. I still prefer the rear LCD and "i" button to make adjustments rather than a separate top LCD panel and, of course, a built-in focus motor would be beneficial so tyhat older non-motorised lenses would auto-focus, but you cant have everything (not at this price-level anyway).
Overall I am delighted with my D5100

Pretty amazing upgrade to the D5000. Much better low-light performance plus several new in-camera effects such as selective colour. I bought mine a week before going on holiday and I was able to get shots I wouldnt have been able to take with my older D5000. The revised control button layout takes a little getting used to, after the D5000 and D80 but once mastered, its as easy to use as ever. Lack of in-built focus motor is a minor annoyance as most of my lenses are AF-S. Exposure metering and colour rendition also seem to be improved over the D5000. Overall I am extremely pleased with my purchase
